Whether you're planning an exciting trip abroad or you want to spend your down time doing something enriching (and don't have time to commit to traditional classes), a language learning app can help. Want to learn a second language? There's an app (actually, several) for that. If you do these regularly, you can be fluent in short order as long as you put in the work(it took me a total of two years but half of that time was spent traveling, and I don't do anything but read in Spanish when traveling, unless of course it a Spanish speaking country, lol). I highly recommend them and after a bit of work with them you should start with conversation practice with something like italki. If you want any advice on how to use them or where to find them (you can probably find both easily with a little Google Fu). If you're a rank beginner you might want to do some duolingo or some other very basic/easy course before jumping into either of these as they start quite difficult. GLOSS has hundreds of short (30 minutes to an hour or so usually) exercises with short audio clips and then questions and other exercises about the audio clip. There's around 100 hours of intense audio exercises along with about 3000 page book containing text of those exercises. FSI blows Pimsleaur and Michael Thomas out of the water and is completely free since it's in the public domain. GLOSS is strictly for practicing reading and listening comprehension although I've only used it for the second. FSI is an incredibly comprehensive all encompassing course, if a little dated. I was 3 points short from all that credit! Regardless, Spanish is a beautiful language and is worth learning. The way I did things on my own got me to nearly test out of 2 years of college Spanish. I had taken Spanish in high school before but I didnt really remember much. Havent focused on Spanish in about 8 months due to my intensive Farsi class, but I've been meaning to get back into it because I dont want to throw away such a good skill and my decent level. It also helped that I worked at a hardware store in the Southern US so there were Latino customers galore to practice with. Also listened to Spanish podcasts and spoke with people on italki like once a week. After Duo, I started reading the news, kids' books, and graded readers. The internet has so many free resources for Spanish that you might not ever need to buy a book for grammar ( is great).
Personally I went through Duolingo first and supplemented that with reading over grammar I came across in the course. Language learning should be a fun experience and, frankly speaking, if you aren't enjoying it you probably won't achieve the results you wanted in the first place.
Lastly, just try to enjoy yourself as much as you can.
It's better to do a little bit everyday then trying to cram all your studying into a single day. You should be listening to podcasts, TV shows, movies and any other good content you like. You should constantly be reading articles, books, stories in Spanish.
